Monday 25th June – bike ***** Felixstowe to Trimley Marshes – sunny and
hot:)
Having been away in our camper for a month we had not seen our friends the
Hurrell’s so we were pleased to accept their kind offer to come down to
lunch at their new static caravan, followed by a bike ride:) Nice morning
at home first, exercises, cleaning van and bikes before heading down to the
prom which was busy with people enjoying the lovely weather. The only
downside was the onshore breeze was tantalizingly close to being sailable!
After a circuit of the caravan site we found the Hurrell’s caravan tucked
away in a beautiful secluded corner with Neil and Linda out in the sun on
the patio. We had a good catch up with a delicious baked potato with tuna,
then after checking the Landguard weather station we went ahead with the
bike ride. We decided to take them to Trimley Marsh bird hides because they
have become keen birdwatchers. We biked through the busy docks with scary
container lorries flying everywhere. I missed the turning so we retraced
our steps to the deadend where the trains leave the docks loaded with
containers. The four electric gates were locked because a train was
leaving. We waited for five minutes and the gates still didn’t unlock so
Neil tried the phone on the fence and someone manning the far gate let us
through saying that one of the gates was broken so his job was to see
people across. You then had to bike uphill past the viewpoint which was far
too over grown to see anything! You then meet up with the road to the
Suffolk Wildlife bird reserve. There were cars waiting at the wooden gate
with Border Force officers there, perhaps there had been a report of
illegal immigrants? We arrived at the River Orwell by Felixstowe docks and
there were more officers there! Neil and I took the sea wall route for
better views while Mag and Linda took the easier lower route. We made it to
the winter flood hide and there was already an electric bike there which we
recognised as old birdwatching friend Roger:) We then had a very pleasant
hour sitting in the cool of the hide watching the action. We saw loads of
Avocets, Lapwings, Godwits, Shell Ducks, Marsh Harriers, Gulls, Red Shanks,
Curlews, Spotted Red Shank, Yellow Wagtail, Starlings etc etc. Roger is a
lovely knowledgeable elderly gentleman who is very pleased to be able to
socialise and pass on his birding wisdom. We love him :) As it was
nearly 5 we decided to return the way we had come but headed towards
Trimley going down Blofield track, past Morrisons, the cemetery and home to
ours for a cuppa and another long chat. What a great day, we made the right
decision to bike as the wind fizzled out but things are looking promising
for later in the week, so fingers crossed for some windsurfing:)
